Sustainable fishing and fish farming

MARR is a leading Italian company in the sale of fresh and frozen seafood, with procurement channels that involve suppliers operating in various countries around the world. The seafood sector is subject to risks related to illegal fishing practices and, in some countries, the risk of human rights violations and failure to respect decent working conditions. In this context, MARR has developed its own management disciplinary for the control of the "Sustainable Seafood Supply Chain" to promote and verify, within the supply chain, the compliance of fishing practices with mandatory requirements, with a view to contrast illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, as well as with the main international guidelines on human rights and labor. In collaboration with an independent third-party body, periodic audits are scheduled on vessels and at production facilities in the countries of origin of extra-EU suppliers and suppliers of private label products, selected with the aim of containing the risk level.
The fishing practices implemented by suppliers must comply with sustainability requirements for the safeguard of marine resources and the environment, requiring the exclusive use of authorized vessels. In aquaculture farms suppliers must apply the most suitable management procedures in order to promote conditions of greater animal welfare.

MARR offers MSC and ASC certified seafood products in its range and has obtained the corresponding Chain of Custody certifications to guarantee their traceability.

MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) certified products are caught using responsible and sustainable fishing methods. They come from fishing areas managed with respect to marine stocks, habitats, and ecosystems.

ASC (Aquaculture Stewardship Council) certified products are raised in a way that minimizes the social and environmental impact of aquaculture.
